Overview

Circa Theatre presents The Travelling Squirrel, written by master New Zealand playwright Robert Lord. Published in 1990 and originally titled Star Crazy, The Travelling Squirrel is a satirical exploration of the entertainment industry and highlights the tension between life and art which is often reflected in Lord’s playwriting. Struggles with the temptations of fame and fortune are increasingly documented in modern day popular culture, making Lord's long forgotten play even more relevant as it is brought to life for the first time on the New Zealand stage.

The two protagonists, husband and wife Bart and Jane are both on the path to stardom, though unfortunately not at parallel points in their respective careers. Bart is a writer, while Jane is a soap actress and their disparate concepts of 'success' and how close it is within their reach causes clashes. Tensions further flare with the introduction of catalyst characters and varying opportunities that come their way.

Starring Paul Waggot and Acushla-Tara Sutton and directed by Susan Wilson, The Travelling Squirrel is the kind of original source material that Woody Allen films are packed with.
