Weta Celebrating 20 Years: An Unexpected Journey
Hear the behind-the-scenes story of Weta from its founder and creative director.
Overview
Us Kiwis have many national icons: including pavlova, Phar Lap, Flight of the Conchords, that guy who sang "How Bizarre" in the 80s, L & P, Weta Workshop and Weta Digital.
Just 20 years ago, the digital effects company called Weta Digital was created by Richard Clarkson, Peter Jackson and Jamie Selkirk to produce some of the digital effects on Heavenly Creatures, the teenage lesbian murder film based on the 1954 Parker-Hulme murder case in Christchurch. Soon after its inception, Weta joined the ranks of national pride-invoking icons, working on some box office greats like Lord of the Rings, Avatar, Planet of the Apes, The Hobbit, Mad Max, Tintin etc. etc.
Officially marking their 20th birthday (which technically is Weta Workshop's 27th birthday, but Weta Digital's 20th birthday), the company have decided to host a Weta Celebrating 20 Years speaker series. An Unexpected Journey - the final talk of the series - will see Richard Taylor, the creative director and founder of Weta Workshop taking the audience on a behind-the-scenes tour of Weta, for free.
