Overview

Ahh, festivals. Who doesn’t love em? No one, of course, because festivals are the greatest thing ever.

As this is the case, absolutely everyone will be very excited to know that Diwali is coming to the windy capital this October to offer Wellingtonians a chance to celebrate and experience Indian culture in all of its exotic glory.

India’s best-loved festival, Diwali symbolises the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil and the renewal of life. To celebrate, families light small oil lamps, known as diyas, around the home and set off fireworks. The festival will feature authentic food stalls showcasing the very best of Indian cuisine, live performances by local and international acts, the hotly contested Bollywood dance competition and a grand finale fireworks display.

Whether you’re eating until you drop, trying your hand at the Rangoli floor art workshops, cuddling up at the street theatre or getting starry-eyed from the ever-amazing fireworks display, I guarantee this festival will be of the good variety. Oh, and did I mention its free? That means there’s no excuse not to celebrate the triumph of good over evil, give thanks for the miraculous renewal of life and chow down on some naan.
