Overview

Yumi Zouma, the eclectic four-person ensemble comprised of Christie Simpson, Sam Perry, Charlie Ryder, and Joshua Burgess are back with a new album, Yoncalla. The accompanying tour will be hitting Wellington come Thursday night, and it promises a new voice from their previous work.

Where their previous two EPs were created effectively over email between the members scattered throughout the world, they gave Yoncalla a singular voice. Taking a break in touring with the likes of Chet Faker and Lorde, they mixed the new work all together, in the Motorbass studio in Paris.

It's an easy listening, groovy album—perfect for a chill Thursday at San Fran. Tracks like Barricade (Matter of Fact), Keep it Close to Me, and Drachma are good for a boogie too.

"Yumi Zouma has always been an exercise in refining ideas and collaborating," says guitarist Charlie Ryder, the band's guitarist, "but this was the first time we weren't limited or protected by distance. The process was different with Yoncalla, and it was weird to present raw ideas to each other in real time, but it's also cool to see songs evolve through collaboration between people in the same room."

Yoncalla is out now through Arch Hill Records.
