From 28–31 January, Zealandia is opening its doors for a series of special late-night events. Dusk is one of the best times to visit the urban ecosanctuary, when some of the creatures really come out of their shell. Species you might see include the tuatara, takahē and little spotted kiwi.

Enjoy a summer evening picnic on the lawn by the lake, take in the view of the birds with a drink on the cafe balcony, or trek further into the 500-acre sanctuary where you'll be surrounded by native bush and can hear the squawks of the kākā as they feed nearby.

You may like to come earlier and spend the whole day, challenging yourself to reach the upper forest tracks. There are 32 kilometres of tracks and trails so there is plenty to explore. Summer is a great time to see the tuatara bathing and takahē feeding in the wetlands, so take this opportunity to explore one of New Zealand's most accessible wildlife sanctuaries where researchers create an environment to help native species flourish.

There is parking on site or you can catch the free shuttle to the sanctuary from the city or top of Wellington Cable Car. Normal entry charges apply.
