Bartender Bar Tour with Riki Carter from CoCo at the Roxy

From Dunedin to England, Coco bartender Riki Carter has lived on both hemispheres of the world for substantial chunks of his life, falling into the hospitality industry about 16 years ago. Since then, he's been making patrons happy with his fine bartending, and jetting around the world competing in cocktail competitions from time to time. We caught up with the bartender extraordinaire for some insider tips on Wellington's drinking scene.

Concrete Playground: What's your favourite drink?
Riki Carter: The one that is in my glass, my second favourite is the one that you buy me.

CP: Tell us an interesting story about yourself.
RC: In 2007 I was lucky enough to compete in the Havana Club Gran Prix, the day that we arrived in to Cuba Fidel Castro stood down from power and the day that we left his brother took reign of the country. Was a very interesting time to be in such a wonderful country.

CP: Let us in on a secret. Where are your favourite bars in Wellington?
RC: Definitely Coco, Ancestral, Hangar, Matterhorn and Havana.

1. Coco at the Roxy

Coco's special. It has a great environment. We're set in the suburbs of Miramar, far away from the hustle and bustle of town, and yet you can still get a very well-made cocktail from our bar team. And then you can even take that drink through with you to watch a movie in our art deco cinema.

Tip: Ask for Ray or myself, we'll fix you something great.

2. Ancestral

Ancestral is a diverse and interesting bar, offering a great selection of cocktail and spirits. The bar really has something for everyone.

Tip: See Hiro or Ben, they're whiskey experts.

3. Hangar

Set in an old car park, Hangar now spends its days as a coffee roaster and café and nights delivering some very inspirational cocktails.

Tip: See Jake or Corey for a good fix.

4. Matterhorn

Matterhorn's back courtyard is always a fun experience, as is going to some of their live gigs.

Tip: Matterhorn has a great selection of wine on offer. Ask for Alex or Jessie to make you a cocktail.

5. Havana

Havana Bar is really well decorated - the bar inspired by the look and feel of a Cuban house. They have weekly live music gigs and great Cuban classic cocktails.

Tip: Ask Adam to make you any of the Cuban classic cocktails like the Mojito or Ron Collins.
