Overview

When you want a local getaway to feel like you've actually, well, gotten away, Waiheke Island is the obvious choice. It requires a boat journey to get there (or a helicopter, if you're feeling particularly flash), but it's only about 35 minutes from the city. One of our favourite spots for an island escape is The Boatshed, a boutique six bedroom hotel based in Little Oneroa, which combines stunning ocean views, easy access to the beach, walking tracks and just the right level of privacy.

A masterclass in laidback luxury thanks to a calming, salt-washed decor and quirky nautical touches like telescopes and lifebelts, it's the little touches at the Boatshed that remind you you're in a five-star space.

If you're staying in the lighthouse suite, don't worry about venturing down the three-story spiral staircase for breakfast. Instead enjoy your service lift for private meal service: order from the kitchen and it will appear in your room in no time. Or if you want to enjoy a five-star version of your quintessential childhood holiday, stay in one of the bungalows — they're modelled on a classic Kiwi bach, but you know, one with a giant bath in the living area. Complimentary treats, an evening port, and beach gear including umbrellas, sun hats, and a beach bag are all provided.

If you feel like going on a meander, the kitchen's organic vegetable garden the back of the hotel is worth investigating — you'll soon see exactly where your award-winning dinner is coming from. Otherwise a series of wineries, white sand beaches and boutique shops are all minutes from the front door — let Jonathan and his team guide you on the best way to spend your day.
