From this week you'll no longer need to think about making the 500-kilometre commute to lick your way through some of the best ice cream in the country. Much-loved Hamilton export Duck Island Ice Cream has opened its first scoop shop in Wellington.

While you can already purchase tubs of Duck Island's gooey goodness at Moore Wilson's, it's hard to beat tasting the product at its source — and sample all of the flavours before you make a decision. And you can do just that at Duck Island's new scoop shop, which can be found in the former site of Chatime at 168 Cuba Street.

Duck Island has made a massive splash since restauranteurs Morgan Glass, Kimberley Higgison and Cameron Farmilo launched the concept in 2015. There are now four Duck Island scoop shops between Auckland and Hamilton, each offering as many as 25 rotating flavours at any one time.

The ice creamery is known for its weird and wonderful creations, from white chocolate and miso sorbet to cinnamon smoked apple pie and black sticky rice. Duck Island Wellington will have 24 flavours available daily, as well as pints and ice cream sandwiches to take away. Hot flavour picks include peanut butter caramel cookie and maple, white chocolate pomegranate macadamia, matcha strawberry milk crumb, and honeycomb smoked almond. The company also offers an extensive dairy-free and vegan range made with coconut milk.

You can pick up one or two flavours in a cone or cup for $6, while the ice cream flight of eight small scoops will set you back $13. Gluten-free cones are available for an extra $1 and you can go all out on toppings, including sprinkles, sherbet, whipped cream, doughnut crumbs and salty caramel sauce, for between 50c–$1. For the indecisive, there's a selection of sundaes, floats and milkshakes.

Find Duck Island Ice Cream's new Wellington scoop shop at 168 Cuba Street, Te Aro. It's open Sunday to Wednesday, 11am–10.30pm and Thursday to Saturday, 11am–12am. To find out more about Duck Island, visit duckislandicecream.co.nz.
