Overview

If you're a "mild-butter-chicken-and-garlic-naan" devotee, it's time to break out of your comfort zone. Luckily, Wellington has just the ticket, with a new eatery serving up South Asian street food that's equally authentic and delicious.

Chaat Street was a pop-up during last year's Wellington on a Plate, and after selling out of over 200 dishes, now has a permanent brick-and-mortar location at 99 Victoria Street, Te Aro. Here you'll find owner and chef Vaibhav Vishen serving up delicious Indian food, tapas style.

The finger-lickin menu changes monthly to reflect the seasons, and showcase a new dish or flavour from the hundreds of street-style foods enjoyed in India. You might get your mitts on slow-cooked kumara covered in species, crispy fish goujons coated with carom spiced chickpeas, or the local favourite, super crunchy and fresh papri chaat. And fans of last year's pop-up will be thrilled to hear two of the most popular dishes remain on the menu: Aloo Tikki Chaat, a skillet potato with crunchy lentils and a flavour-filled sauce, and Kashmiri Kanti, a pan-tossed dish of marinated lamb and vegetables bursting with chillis and coriander.

To wash it down you might opt for a traditional milky chai — or perhaps brunch out with a chilli margarita or bubblegum martini. Here at Chaat Street, rules are made to be broken.
