Overview

Aah, K C. The site of many a late-night duck with oyster sauce binge, this Courtenay Place classic has been around for absolutely ever. Those in the know always head to K C after a boogie, because it's absolutely out the gate in terms of value and flavour. The portions are huge, always full of flavour and different elements that seem to arrive on your table in no time at all. Very few dishes are over the $15 mark.

We've heard the menu described as "the size of my list of regrets so far this year," with over 100 dishes on it. So impressive. I've been given a top tip to order from the bottom half of the menu for best results, but to be honest what's good is anyone's guess — with that number of dishes, you really can just select according to mood. They've got a full lineup from Chinese food through to roti canai, salt and pepper deep fried squid to pad thai. The Shanghai-style fried noodles are great, as are the dumplings. Truly, take a punt and try something new. Washed down with an ice cold can of Coke, of course.

It's one of the most inclusive, casual restaurants in the city, with everyone filling the booths and tables. Music's not necessary — the chatter of families and friends out for a meal together is the nicest sound.

We'll describe the decor and atmosphere for the purposes of this being a rounded profile, but the focus is firmly on the food in this spot. Where else can you visit in Wellington where a lineup of glistening, dripping roast ducks is a decor element? K C is bare bones, familiar and friendly, and that's just how we like it.
