Overview

The Newtown outpost of Peoples Coffee has been a much-loved spot for the past few years, and now they've ventured into the CBD to take up a little spot in the rapidly growing Lukes Lane precinct on the corner of Taranaki and Manners/Courtenay.

It's a beauty — all blond wood and morning sun. Sparkling and still water on tap, a delicious lineup of sweet treats from Bridget at Milk Crate, and menu by Esther Lewis, starring her excellent line of live food, jams, jellies and almond butters. Esther's toast creations are basically legendary around Newtown, with seasonal toasts piled high. She's a flavour designer, and toast is the medium she chooses to work with, fiddling with combinations until she gets the taste, look, texture and garnish just right.

Try one of her beetroot pickled egg, pickled beetroot pinto bean, turmeric almond butter, fennel turmeric pickle toasts, or the chocolate almond butter and orange marmalade on toasted Shelly Bay Baker rye. Her organic stewed ginger apples atop The Oatery's spiced granola and Zany Zeus organic yoghurt is also heaven. This is just a taste of the menu which will change with the seasons.

Add to that the excellent coffee that Peoples is known for, and we reckon you've got yourself a solid new coffee local (it's also open right through to close of business at 5pm, if you've got a caffeine hankering at 4.30pm).
