Warbirds and Wheels
If planes, trains and automobiles are your thing, pay a visit to this historic little museum complete with a retro cafe and fireplace at the Wanaka airport.
Overview
If you or your bae is into cars, trucks and planes, especially those with history, then this museum will be perfect. The well laid out and informative display boasts a throng of classic vintage vehicles — mostly American — as well as historic fighter aircraft from both World Wars and modern jets. It's not a huge museum, but the exhibits have been restored and looked after with love.
If cars aren't your thing, make a bee-line straight for the 1950s-inspired diner which features a jukebox, retro furniture imported direct from Chicago and 1959 Harley Davidson motorbike installed overhead at the entrance. Be sure to try the specialty Warbirds Pies, made fresh each morning and served with a side of salad or fries.
Warbirds and Wheels is located five minutes' drive from Wanaka city, at Wanaka Airport. It's open seven days a week, from 8am–4pm, tickets cost $20 for adults and $5 for children. Don't forget to check out the display on local aviation legend Sir Tim Wallis, to get a bit New Zealand history.
