Overview

The Tranzalpine train runs through Arthur's Pass to Greymouth and is a perfect way to understand how quickly the South Island landscape changes from one location to the next. The journey covers 223 kilometres in five hours and takes in some of the most stunning sights of New Zealand's South Island. Through the Canterbury Plains and the braided Waimakariri River, on to the rugged Southern Alps and native beech forests to the wild West Coast — it's train travel at its most scenic.
