Overview

Get a feel for life in contemporary China at ACMI this summer. Starting on December 3, their China Up Close program will include exhibitions, video installations, talks and workshops, as well as some of the very best films the Chinese motion picture industry has to offer.

The centrepiece of the program is Yang Fudong: Filmscapes, a free exhibition that showcases the work of one of China's leading moving-image artists. As part of the exhibit, ACMI will also present a one-off screening of Fudong's avant-garde film work Seven Intellectuals in a Bamboo Forest, which clocks in at an endurance-testing 290 minutes.

The program also features a series of panel discussions, many of which will be complemented by film screenings. A talk on martial arts films will be accompanied by Wong Kar-wai's sumptuous wuxia epic The Grandmaster, while a fantastic documentary about dissident artist Ai Weiwei will be followed by a roundtable about art as a method of political expression.
