Overview
Any artwork that consists of 3000kg of wood, 200 neon lights and 60 litres of paint is bound to be impressive, especially if it comes with a swing. Which is exactly what Gregor Kregar's New Structures art work is.
The New Structures exhibition showcases the latest in a series of large scale, architectural installations including Paviilion Structure and the Dream House Project. The potential and influence of utopian architectural aspirations is an important influence on Gregor Kregar's practice. Kregar plays with the idea of dynamic forms built from humble materials. Kregar frequently works with recycled materials, giving new life to discarded timber from leaky homes and buildings.
New Structures is reminiscent of a playhouse or a gazebo, with its flourishes of colour and the addition of the swing. The crosshatching of beams and boards resembles a line drawing realised in three dimensions. The white paint and the glow of the neon soften the roughly hewn wood and jagged construction, creating an inviting and contemplative atmosphere. It's the perfect place for a bit of time out from a hectic day, whether on one of the park benches or under the neons on the swing.
