Overview

Hāngī Master's Rewi Spraggon was taught the art of earth cooking by his father, with some of his prized cooking rocks tracing back generations. With fire, bare earth and at least three to four hours cooking time, his traditional version of the hāngī allows Kiwis to see, smell, taste our indigenous food, which is over a thousand years old.

While his waterfront hāngī cafe The Māori Kitchen is closed for business under COVID-19 restrictions, this week Spraggon will be hitting the road delivering the traditional meal around Auckland.

You'll have four locations to choose from when picking up your authentic in-ground hāngī: Te Puea Marae, Papakura Marae, Awataha Marae and Hoani Waititi Marae. The menu features your traditional hāngī feast comprising smoke-infused pork, chicken, kūmara, potatoes, pumpkin, cabbage and stuffing. It will set you back $17.

The cut-off date for orders is Tuesday, May 5 by 3pm. Email Rewi at [email protected] with your name and mobile number.
