Overview

With a rainbow explosion and booty-shaking beats, the colourful cast of this fast paced production burst onto the stage. And so begins Purple Rainbow; the epic journey of Roberto, strait-laced gay zombie killer.

Roberto’s life is great; great job, great apartment, just great. And when the hottest girl in the office asks him to be her date for a wedding, Roberto thought things couldn’t get any better. Well, he was right.

The date with the luscious Kate doesn’t exactly go to plan and after an unusual dream involving prancing purple unicorns, queer things start happening. Roberto puts two and two together and realises the gay zombie apocalypse is finally upon them. Roberto, Ash and Kate head for shelter in her ute trying to escape impending fate.

This classic “if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em” story is cleverly articulated through a series of snazzy, well-choreographed and downright hilarious dance numbers. The soundtrack will have you waltzing down memory lane and bopping in your seats while the colour-coordinated costumes strike the perfect balance between tacky and cool.

Beneath the jazz hands lies a layer of social commentary which makes for amusement, but digs a little deeper. The narration was enough to keep the story rolling smoothly without being overdone and there were plenty of laughs to be had along the way. The energy required to keep up such a pace is phenomenal and the Dynamo dance troupe kept it pumping right to the fruity end.

Roberto Nascimento made the perfect leading man and was entertaining to watch, especially in the sultry sauna scene. Nevertheless, the star of the show was undeniably Kate Simmonds in sassy red PVC. How anyone can manage to dance and pull such an array of facial expressions at the same time is beyond me. Ash Jones and the multi-talented (creator/director/dancer) Thomas Sainsbury deserve a special mention, but every member of the rainbow played their part well.

It’s fun and silly with an infectious energy; after a dose of the Purple Rainbow you won’t be able to wipe the smile off your face.
