Brick Bay Guided Walk
A grand day out, surrounded by contemporary sculpture in the spring sunshine and finished off with delicious wine.
Overview
Artweek Auckland 2014 veers off to the to pay a visit to Warkworth. The local Brick Bay Wines plays host not only to 5 hectares of vineyards, but to an art trail of over 45 sculptures. The land occupied by the Brick Bay Farm was once settled by a small community in the 19th century, surrounded by Kauri forests. These were cleared as farming took over and when the owners of Brick Bay Wines bought the land in 1986, they replanted much of it with native bush. The vinyards followed in 1995, with the Sculpture Trail being established in 2007.
The Brick Bay Sculpture Trail weaves its way through the bush and grassy pastureland over a 2km walkway. It's a beautiful site with a wide variety of sculpture from both emerging and established contemporary artists. The work is for sale, and so the exhibit is in a constant state of flux, which gives you a mighty good excuse to visit it, and The Glass House more than once for wine tastings and tasty platters of nibbles to match.
The trail walk would normally set you back a modest $12, but as part of Artweek Auckland 2014 the experience is on offer for free, along with a guided tour and visit to the Private Collection, which is normally not available to the public. Sounds like a grand day out in the spring sunshine to me. So don some walking shoes and remember to RSVP to reserve a spot.
