Overview

1885, nestled in the popular Britomart precinct and set inside the historic Stanbeth building, features restored brick, exposed kauri beams and luxurious leather couches, while the bar itself boasts an extensive wine cellar and cocktails selection.

Suffering the envious fate to its sister bars, 1885 enjoys the close kinship with Britomart Country Club which delivers 1885 a well needed external area. Regular jazz and club nights, 1885 has built itself a solid reputation of being the go to for late night dwellers.

Called 1885, a direct reference to the year the building was first built, this place has all the ingredients for a serious night out. Although located on Customs Street (not far from Queen Street) you won't find a flashy big entrance anywhere on the street. Instead you will need to journey around the block, down another private access lane and through an opening in the thick brick wall. The opposite end of the main bar leads up to a mezzanine lounge full of deep buttoned black velvet couches just perfect for hiding away from the crowds.

The best is still to come. Venture further underground and you will find a stunning cocktail bar that must be experienced to be believed. Dedicated hosts will show you to a limited number of luxurious leather suites where you can order both classic and newly created cocktails made by some of the best bar tenders in New Zealand. The cellar wine list is extensive and contains bottles from throughout the world’s best wine producing areas.
