A Christmas Carol

The age-old warm fuzzies-inducing Christmas tale.

Overview

Sylvia Park started slamming Snoopy’s Christmas in September, and Smith and Caughey’s South Pole window scene will be up any day now, so why not start planning your Christmas calendar early, kicking off with the Royal New Zealand Ballet’s production of A Christmas Carol? The reproduction of Charles Dickens’ novella through dance form has been dancing in the UK for over twenty years and Vodafone is bringing the production to New Zealand this Christmas.

We all know the age old tale of anti-hero Scrooge, the Christmas-hating grinch, who refuses to attend Christmas parties and turns his nose up at volunteer workers gathering money for a Christmas feast for the poor. When Scrooge is visited by his late business partner’s ghost, and then three spirits of Christmas past, preset and future, he receives a wake-up call and instantly regrets his lifelong hatred of the silly season. Yes, the story is old and well-told, but we have never seen it in full Royal New Zealand Ballet style.

650 costumes, 75 characters, 8 showings nation-wide and a musical track comprised of Carl Davis’ (television composer) composition of all of our favourite carols and Chrissy tunes, the production gets even the grinchiest of Christmas-haters in the mood to belt out Rudolph the Reindeer and throw a turkey in the oven.
