Auckland Heritage Festival 2018

Overview

With 39 percent of Aucklanders being born overseas, Auckland is the fourth most-foreign-born population in the world making us more culturally diverse than London and New York. To celebrate the colourful characters and diverse communities that have and continue to shape Tāmaki Makaurau, the Auckland Heritage Festival returns for another year.

2018's theme is Ngā iwi o Tāmaki Makaurau — celebrating the heritage of our people. There are over 200 free or low-cost events across the region. Between 29 September to 14 October, there will be exhibitions, talks, tours, walks, exhibitions, markets and school activities, with something to suit all ages and tastes.

There are plenty of opportunities to hear the oft overlooked stories of those who have helped shape our city. Highlights include Dall'Altra Parte Del Mondo (To the other side of the world) — an illustrated talk that tells the tale of the Venetian sailor who came with Captain James Cook on the Endeavour in 1769 and the Italian migrants that followed.

Join the Ah Chee family to discover the stories of the Avondale Chinese Market Gardeners. The Karangahape Fiafia Walk showcases Pasifika stories in a lively display of poetry, oratory, music and dance. 125 years of women's suffrage is celebrated in events such as Wāhine Take Action Women of Karangahape Road which looks at women who led and shaped communities. Augmented Reality Historic Tour of Uptown will take you on a journey through time and space like no other and finally, tantalise your tastebuds with the Heritage Feast on Waiheke Island.
