Overview

South African-born chicken joint Nando's is slinging chips for a cause. From Monday, 2 November to Sunday, 8 November, the Cans for Chips initiative will see Nando's restaurants across the country hand out regular-size servings of its PERi-PERi chips in return for a can of non-perishable food. All proceeds and cans collected from the Auckland drive will be donated to the Auckland City Mission.

There will be a maximum one serving of PERi-PERi chips per person, and the full Nando's condiment range will be available for those who want some extra heat.

The restaurant chain has a long-standing relationship with the Mission; every day the company distributes left-over chicken to the charity's community drop-in centre. This year, the chain's goal is to collect 10,000 cans so they have a healthy stockpile heading into Christmas.

Outside of Auckland the cans will go to Hamilton's Kaivolution, Bay of Plenty's Good Neighbour, Wellington's City Mission, Christchurch's City Mission and Dunedin's KiwiHarvest.

There are 16 Nando's locations in Auckland.
