Overview

There's no shortage of openair cinema experiences in Auckland, but the classic drive-in where film-goers tune in from the comfort of their car is still relatively unchartered territory. Pull up the handbrake — Mount Smart Stadium will become New Zealand's biggest drive-in movie theatre this month for a series of screenings under the stars.

From November 26–29, visitors will be able to drive their vehicles on to the turf to watch flicks on the gigantic screen which usually delivers live-action replays. The lineup includes flashy heist movie The Italian Job, classic slasher film Texas Chainsaw Massacre, 1930s musical fantasy The Wizard of Oz, and Elton John biopic Rocketman.

Spaces at Cinema at the Stadia will be limited to 200 cars, with a maximum of four people per car. To create the classic drive-in experience, an FM radio station will be created so that film-goers can tune in on their car radios. Tickets are also available to grab a seat on the grass, with space for bean bags, low seats and picnic blankets. Tickets for are $75 per vehicle with a limit of four people per vehicle and $20 per person for grass seating.

There'll be live entertainment, a dining zone to grab dinner before the movie and a Little Creatures pop-up bar.
