Overview

Inspired by an ancient Indian tradition celebrating the triumph of light over darkness, Diwali commemorates the return of Lord Rama and his family following a 14-year exile at the hands of the demon king Rawana. It is known as the 'Festival of Lights' for the fireworks and clay lamps lit by the people to guide the travellers on their journey home. Diwali Festival has become an unmissable weekend-long event on Auckland's calendar, with the upcoming festival attracting more than 100 performance groups and over 60 food and craft stalls.

An opportunity for all Aucklander's to share in a much loved cultural tradition, visitors will be delighted by local and international performance groups; a Bollywood dance competition; a contemporary Indian fashion show; master puppeteers and a whole manner of workshops and activities to keep the kids happy. Auckland Art Gallery opens it's Story of Rama exhibition, there'll be a sensory installation at the ASB Supercube and even a dedicated Cricket Zone. Bring an empty belly for the variety of Indian cuisine on offer, including sweet treats that'll have you coming back for seconds and stick around for the spectacular fireworks finale on Sunday evening.

Diwali Festival takes over the inner city Aotea complex and Queen Street area from noon to nine each day. Plan your weekend using the festival programme and bring cash for the food stalls just in case.
