Overview

Presented by the EcoMatters Environment Trust, EcoWest is a month-long celebration of the environment and the giant floating orb that we call home. More than 100 events will take place as part of this year's festival giving Aucklanders an opportunity to get involved, show mother nature some love and learn something new.

The official opening event is the Down & Dirty Rooftop Party where you can choose to earn entry by volunteering at a series of working bees. Held atop Titirangi's Lopdell Precinct, guests at the event will be treated to delicious kai, local brews and live music. Tickets can also be picked up for $30.

From there, the festival offers the perfect opportunity to pick up some new life skills, including the basics of beekeeping, making soy wax candles, creating an edible garden at home, the trick to keeping chickens in the city, and making your own fresh cheeses.

The Creatures of the Dark Walk is an after-hours tour along Titirangi's Exhibition Drive with a goal of seeing glow worms, cave weta and bats in their natural habitat; Pedal and Pizza is a two-hour bike ride with a midway coffee stop and wood-fired pizza party at the end; and the Green Bay Street Food Festival is a zero-waste gathering of local food vendors.

It will end with a bang at EcoDay on Sunday 15 April, a family-friendly event at New Lynn's Olympic Park featuring talks and workshops, a velodrome bike party, music and food. For the full program, visit the EcoWest Festival website.
