Father John Misty

Sarcastic piano ballads, country blues and jazz funeral.

Overview

I think we can attest that the St James Theatre has officially reopened with a growing number of shows being consistently announced for the venue. The latest of those announcements is a gentleman known for his prolific output, musical chops and acerbic wit.

This December, Josh Tillman (otherwise known as Father John Misty) will play his first ever show in New Zealand. After escaping a frighteningly religious upbringing, the U.S. songwriter began producing music under his own name. He released seven albums in as many years, and eventually went on to hold down the drum stool for harmonious indie-folk band Fleet Foxes.

Upon the band’s hiatus in 2012, and realising that his own name had become an alter ego, he went solo once again, adopting the Father John Misty persona. Under the name he’s since described to sound like a “Christian puppet show,” Tillman has released two albums. The latest I Love You, Honeybear saw the light of day this year, impressing the hell out of critics across the globe. Spanning everything from sarcastic piano ballads, country blues and jazz funeral, the album is said to be a concept album about his personal life.

Off the back of playing the European festival circuit, Father John Misty will embark on a headline tour through Australia and New Zealand this December.
