Overview

Venture into the new industrial warehouse turned gallery on Ponsonby's Rose Road this weekend for Future Islands: In Conversation. Instead of viewing paintings and sculptures, be magnetised by some of the country's greatest architectural installations. This kind of architecture is far from your average apartment structure, we're talking groundbreaking, cutting edge design that has been showcased globally.

You may have heard of New Zealand's contribution to the Venice 2016 Biennale with the exhibit Future Islands; a collection of architectural sculptures curated by Charles Walker (associate professor in AUT University's Faculty of Design and Creative Technologies) and Kathy Waghorne.

Future Islands is predominantly a homage to New Zealand culture, but also draws ties to Italy, with its structure a reference to Italo Calvino's Invisible Cities, a text which recounts the 55 fictitious cities which are discussed by Venetian explorer, Marco Polo. Future Islands also displays a representation of 55 architectural projects that represent New Zealand design.

The exhibit's precedented success has brought the installation back down under for an exclusive showing at our favourite new gallery, Objectspace. This Sunday, you can go and see the critically acclaimed work for free from 2pm.
