Overview

Named ‘Best Young Gun’ by Rolling Stone magazine in 2011, Clark grew up in Austin, Texas and started playing at legendary Antone’s Blues Club with the likes of Jimmie Vaughan, brother of Stevie, while still in his teens. His talent didn’t go unrecognised even then, with Austin locals declaring May 3, 2001 ‘Gary Clark, Jr. Day’ when he was a mere 17 years old.

The 2012 release of his major label debut album Blak and Blu saw the accolades continue to roll in. He has won a Grammy, played guest spots with the Rolling Stones and even performed at the White House. His performances have been described as ‘wild, impassioned and often elegantly graceful’, his set at Glastonbury in 2013 was anointed ‘the most electric performance of the festival’ and music fans have dubbed him ‘the past and the future of the blues’.

The last time New Zealand audience got to witness his brand of new-age shredding was when he opened for The Red Hot Chili Peppers in January 2013.

With such abundant praise to his name, and so much achieved in his 30 years, Clark seems to be heading for ever greater success, and is without a doubt one to watch.
