Hip Hop-eration
As it stands, this Waiheke-based group are the world's oldest hip hop crew.
Overview
The story of the Hip Op-eration Crew is not a your ordinary inspirational hip hop tale. It's set in a place as far away from the Bronx as can be—the idyllic Waiheke Island. And the crew comprises 22 senior citizens, with over half of the members in their 80s and 90s. In fact, they earned themselves the title of the world's oldest dance group in the 2014 Guinness World Records. They have competed in the New Zealand National Hip Hop Championships twice and even took their act all the way to Las Vegas in 2013.
Impressed yet? Well, prepare to be bawled over by the inspiring story of this brave and seriously fun group of people, captured in Hip Hoperation. The film follows the crew on the journey to Las Vegas, tracking the challenges and victories along the way. Hip Hoperation was a favourite at the International Film Festival in Amsterdam last year, and now it's our turn to be delighted by the film.
The Hip-Operation Crew started out as a flash mob, organized by Billie Jordan, the wonderful mastermind behind the whole thing. Billy Jordan learned some hip hop moves from You Tube, gathered her troops and whipped them into shape with encouragement, enthusiasm and a whole lot of heart. All this while still working full-time. She gave a very moving talk at TedxAuckland this year, but if you missed out, then definitely nab yourself a ticket to Hip Hoperation. You will even be treated to a live performance from the group in all its glory. Plus, you'll be helping to the group to fundraise for their next dream - a trip to the birthplace of hip hop itself, the Bronx, New York City.
