Overview

Home AKL brings together the work of diverse Pacific artists and reveals the ever present role Pacific art plays in New Zealand's identity and cultural landscape.

Artwork by 20 Pacific artists spanning three generations shows how these practitioners use personal experience to examine concepts of 'home' and belonging in their own unique ways. Works display a range of media, including painting, sculpture, photography, video and adornment. Alongside artwork from the gallery's collection and loans, Home AKL will feature 13 new commissions, including five from Fiji, Kiribati, Niue, Samoa, Tonga and Tuvalu. It includes work by Joana Monolagi, Louisa Humphry, Kaetaeta Watson, Foufili Halagigie, Semisi Fetokai Potauaine, Kolokesa Kulikefu, Hulita Tupou and Lakiloko Keakea, among others.

Opening day is free and there will be music along with some great performances including hip hop dance and poetry readings on the topic of 'home'. A family-friendly Big Day Art will also be held with art workshops inspired by the exhibition. Over the course of Home AKL, the exhibition's supporting visitor programme will include free artist talks, film screenings and a seminar. So make sure you head along and immerse yourself in some of the vibrant Pacific culture Auckland has to offer.
