Hudson and Halls

The pioneers of the comedy-cooking show.

Overview

While Nigella Lawson's sensual presentation style might currently be the de jour of the Living Channel (cooking's most influential platform – according to me), cooking blended with comedy is the cooking show world's favourite underdog subgenre, mostly thanks to the internet. (Think Moon TV's Speed Cooking, The Katering Show etc.)

But as with any genre, there existed pioneers, those who went forth along the road less travelled and paved the way for others. In the niche subgenre of New Zealand cooking-comedy shows, existed Peter Hudson and David Halls' Hudson and Halls slapstick cult cooking show which ran on New Zealand screens from 1976 to 1986 (at which point the two took the show to England). Besides the boundary-breaking comedy aspect of the show, Hudson and Halls' private relationship broke its own barriers, the two's romance described as 'New Zealand's original great gay love story'.

Hudson and Halls is an ode to the two entertainers' personal and private lives, set in a 1980s television studio and which guarantees laughter and dubious cooking. Buy a ticket and pay your respects to the cooking show innovators of the past.
