Overview
The aim of the Latin America & Spain Film Festival (LASFF) is to bring New Zealand communities closer to the history, culture and social developments of Latin America and Spain through film. To do so, every year the not-for-profit organisation hits the road with an entirely free program of films spanning Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Mexico, Peru and Spain. This year the event will be running from September to November in 11 different cities.
Taking place at Auckland's University of Technology (AUT) from 19–26 September, the lineup covers everything from slapstick solo parenting to the challenges women face in Cuban society and the horrors of the Salvadoran Civil War.
Marshland follows two detectives as they hunt down a killer in a remote marshland community; Viejos Amigos tells of the misadventures of three lifelong friends in their 80s who steal the ashes of their departed comrade; She Is Ramona stars stand-up comedian Andrea Ortega as an upbeat 30-something who was wrongly fired for being overweight; The Path of Shadows is an intimidating docu-drama talking about the horrors of war and its consequences; Gabo, the Magic Reality of Columbia explores the life of Gabriel Garcia Márquez from his humble beginnings until he became one of the most famous Latin American writers.
