Overview

Matariki is upon us again. For those of you who are new here, or who spend their winters in hibernation, Matariki is the Maori New Year. The name translates to "eyes of god" and refers to a cluster of stars visible only in mid-winter in the Southern Hemisphere, and when the stars can be seen it is said to be a symbol of new beginnings.

This year to celebrate Matariki, Studio One Toi Tu is presenting The Path is Made by Walking exhibition, which, fittingly, is all about new beginnings. The works on show illustrate the challenging and inspirational journeys taken by the young South Aucklanders involved in Art ACTion, which is a cultural development programme led by the community group, Nga Rangatahi Toa. During their time in the programme, students have been mentored by local artistic talent, Tourettes, and hip hop artist Louis Knuxx, who have helped them embrace their pasts and prepare themselves for opportunities that might be on the horizon. It's all pretty inspirational.

The exhibition is extensive, featuring on-trend interactive installations, in-progress works and community events where the crowds can get involved in the artistic process. If you're wanting an authentic Matariki experience, things get real in The Path is Made by Walking.
