Overview

For the second year running the country's biggest celebration of Mexican culture will be held in Auckland. Taking over ASB Showgrounds on Saturday 28 October, Mexfestival marks the arrival of Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) — the Central American holiday that honours those who have passed.

All things Mexican will be on offer at the day-long event. That means mariachi bands, folklore, tequila drinking, Mexican wrestling, piñata smashing and a glorious selection of authentic food. Come with an empty stomach to devour all the good stuff: tacos, tortas, tostadas and the odd burrito for good measure.

Workshops are a key part of the festival — attendees will have the opportunity to make authentic tortillas, paint a Día de Muertos Calvera (Day of the Dead skull) on canvas while knocking back margaritas, and witness the Latin American dancing style of bachata. The Day of the Dead theme will be evident across the carnival, including the tradition of ofrenda, a ritual altar to honour someone who has passed.
