Movies in Parks
Free outdoor screenings of much loved classics and recently released blockbusters.
Overview
Why spend your evenings shivering in an over-air conditioned movie theatre with other peoples stale popcorn fragments buried deep within the seats when you could be lounging under the stars at your local park?
For another year running, the Auckland City Council is setting up screens all over the ‘burbs for your viewing pleasure. Running every Friday and Saturday nights (weather dependent of course) from the 10th of Janruary through to the end of March, your local will be screening much loved classics and recently released blockbusters. This season’s line up is suitable for the whole family with the occasional M rating every now and again. Before you ask, yes Frozen will be playing.
So pack up your flat, the family and the dog, bring as many snacks as you want as there will be no ushers glaring at your non-cinema purchased goods and settle down for an evening of free, star lit entertainment. I have heard some people go as far as to pack the spare couch from the garage. Your grandmother’s moth eaten woolen blanket will also do the trick.
Start times will of course vary depending on sunsets but with plenty of pre-show entertainment there is no excuse not to come early and make a full evening of it.
Some of this year's highlights include:
The Rocky Horror Picture Show, 16 January, Tamakae Reserve
The Lego Movie, 31 January, Monte Cecilia Park
The Book Thief, 6 March, Grey Lynn Park
The Fault in Our Stars, 13 March, Luckens Reserve
Boy, 20 March, Tahaki Reserve
