Overview

Most commonly known as the access point for Mount Everest, Nepal is so much more than a nation with gigantic peaks. Sandwiched between India and China, it is also the birthplace of Buddhism and home to the world's deepest gorge and the highest lake on earth.

Shining a light on the landlocked country this November will be Nepal Festival. Presented by the New Zealand Nepal Society, the biennial festival moves outdoors for 2018 — it will be held at Aotea Square from 10am to 6pm on 17 November.

You can expect a full blown celebration of Nepalese culture. Stallholders will be serving an array of delicious Nepalese foods — expect plenty of rice and curried vegetables alongside the national dish of lentil dahl, meat-filled dumplings, hot noodle soup, and a cross between a doughnut and a bagel.

Traditional and contemporary Nepalese music and performances will be on show, including much-loved instrumental folk Nepalese band, Kutumba, who are flying in especially for the event. More acts are yet to be announced on the lineup. Rounding things off will be Nepalese arts and crafts.

Stay tuned for more information about festival stallholders and activities.
