One of Those

A fascinating piece of New Zealand gay history
Kyle Bell
August 12, 2014

Overview

The story of a fascinating piece of New Zealand gay history, when in 1920, the Mayor of Wanganui, Charles Mackay, shot but did not kill the soldier/poet D'Arcy Cresswell who was blackmailing him to resign the mayoralty or he would expose him as a homosexual.

This 1 hour performance traces the events leading up to and including the sensational trial and the consequences on the 2 men for the following decades. D'Arcy Cresswell and his legacy in NZ literature has fallen into oblivion but from the outset both literary references and humour abound, allowing the self-proclaimed genius to bring to life the literary personalities of his day.
