Overview

Now in its seventh year, the O'Neill Aotearoa Surf Film Festival celebrates the best of surf culture and our connection with the environment through a curated selection of international surf features, documentaries and short films.

While the waves have run on this year's touring festival, surf fans will be pleased to know that the series is coming back for a special one-off screening in August. The Winter Sessions event will showcase the best international cold water and winter warmer films to fuel your mid-winter wave hunt.

Mount Eden's Crystal Palace will serve as the venue across two sessions on Friday, 2 August. From 6.30pm, Beyond The Noise and A Land Shaped By Women will hit the big screen. The former nature-focused surf feature comes from Australian director Andrew Kaineder, while the latter follows world snowboarding champions Anne-Flore Marxer and Aline Bock as they explore the snow and surf of Iceland.

After short break intermission, session two will kick off at 8.30pm with headline feature Heavy Water. The film from American director Michael Oblowitz follows big wave surfer Nathan Fletcher through the evolution of surfing and his relationship with gigantic waves. A selection of films from the ASFF short film competition will precede each session.

A licensed bar will be available in the cinema for the main festival.
