For two nights only, Douglas McMaster from the UK's Silo restaurant will be cooking up a progressive dinner in celebration of Orphan's Kitchen's fifth birthday.
Silo, based in Brighton, was opened in 2014 and was the UK's first zero-waste restaurant. Soon after the restaurant won the The Observer's award for best ethical restaurant in 2016. Although Orphan's Kitchen, opened up in 2013 by two friends, Tom Hishon (Executive Chef) and Josh Helm (Manager), is yet to reach a completely zero waste status, the restaurant echoes many similar sustainability values in its manifesto. These include: "practically express the qualities of purity, simplicity and sustainability that we would like to see associated with New Zealand's food culture" and "promot[ing] the protection of native fish species in our seas, and openly champion more sustainable approaches to harvesting food in our forests, farmlands and rivers."
The Ponsonby-based, sustainable festivities will go off on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 July, with tickets selling at $120 a pop. Book online, or for groups of eight or more, email email@example.com.
