Overview

Films festivals are the perfect way to while away rainy evenings and at this time of year, there's plenty of choice. Now underway is the 4th Reel Brazil Film Festival, featuring 10 excellent films which offer us a glimpse into Brazilian culture and ways of life. There's drama, documentary, action and even a rom-com, but the best thing about this year's Reel Brazil Film Festival is nearly twice as many screenings as last year's festival.

For the sports buffs there's the black and white football drama Heleno and sailing doco, The World in Two Round Trips, which was 10 years in the making. For the socially conscious there's Who Cares? which captures the stories of everyday people trying to make a difference, change the world and inspire others to do the same.

Then there's Pirinop, My First Contact, which is an in-depth look at the first interaction with the Ikpeng indigenous people and their subsequent relocation far from their native territory. Mixing archival footage with still images and re-enactments, this intriguing story has got to be one of the picks of the festival. The other favourite is sure to be music documentary Tropicália, which is a fascinating insight into one of Brazil's most important musical and artistic periods, 'Tropicalismo'.

All films are screening at Rialto cinemas Newmarket in Portuguese with English subtitles. You can also sample a little Brazilian culture at the festival mini-market selling Brazlian products and craft.
