Overview
In The Encounter, English director Simon McBurney tells the true story of National Geographic photographer Loren McIntyre (Richard Katz) who finds himself lost in the Brazilian Amazon.
Set in 1969, Katz recreates the journey the photographer made into the depths of the rainforest, utilising a range of props and technology to depict the dynamic forest soundscape. As a solo performer on stage, Katz cleverly creates the impression that there are other performers present at certain moments using sounds produced via recordings, voice distortion and props. The type of sound featured in the show uses binaural technology, which is also referred to as 3D audio, encouraging the audience to feel more involved in the journey the actor takes in his performance.
The Encounter has been performed at the Edinburgh Festival, the Barbican, Onassis Cultural Centre and many other highly regarded venues across Europe. Make sure to check out the memorable performance while its down under as part of the Auckland Arts Festival.
