Overview

With grey clouds looming overhead and the chance of rain this weekend steadily increasing, The Growlers are here in Auckland to make summer last forever, or at least as long as the set list.

The Growlers are everything that's right with Americana music: the twangy sound from a honky tonk dragged through an effects studio and then taken out to the surf, frolicking gleefully in the waves with some psychedelic hippies. The band call this fusion "beach goth".

The Growlers have released four albums, their most recent Chinese Fountain was written at a friend's house in Topanga Canyon after a fireworks accident left their studio in a pile of ash. Their latest album's sound harks back to the old days of music when the internet wasn't quite as "big as Jesus or John Lennon", and when lo-fi dirty surf music wasn't scrubbed up and repackaged for the masses.
