Overview

Joy Spence was the spirit industry's first ever female Master Blender. From her role as Chief Chemist for Appleton Estate's parent company she made the move into the position at a time when rum was primarily made and consumed by men. Her unrivalled mastery of taste and smell sees her maintain the quality of existing rums and create new blends.

Celebrating 20 years in the role and her visit to New Zealand, Joy will bring a tiny piece of Jamaica to Britomart. The pop-up bar and kitchen, named Crafted with Joy, will take over The Deck at Ostro for four days from August 2-5.

In addition to an Appleton Estate cocktail, ticket holders will be treated to a tasting menu of comfort food from the Caribbean created by Jamaican chef Larry Clarke. The feature dish includes either three-day smoked jerk chicken or pork with rice and peas, Jamaican fried dumplings and spicy slaw.

To complete the experience, the space will be set up like to feel like Joy's home, reggae will be firing on the sound system and the Joy Anniversary Blend Rum, a 25-year-old minimum aged rum, will be available as a taster.
