Overview

You’re Next is a refreshing take on the horror genre. Set during a wedding anniversary celebration, the Davison family home is invaded by a gang of masked killers. Despite its disturbing subject, director Adam Wingard and writer Simon Barrett have delivered a surprisingly comical take on a family massacre.

The wealthy estate provides a familiar setting for a horror narrative. In what unfolds as a laugh out loud dinner, some members of the Davison children soon start to realise how dysfunctional the family really is. But it's here where You’re Next enters its stride. From this point on, it's all blood and gore.

Erin (played ably by Sharni Vinson) unexpectedly demonstrates her guerrilla warfare instincts and gives the mysterious masked killers a run for their money. The apparatus at play here reflects the level of violence - machetes, crossbows and screwdrivers to name a few. The results are nasty, brutal and thankfully swift. But it’s the movie’s darkly humorous sensibility to such acts of violence that make the film very watchable and enjoyable.

The deliberately forced dialogue between the characters is often amusing and as the unbridled violence escalates, the hilarity increases. You're Next provides a healthy dose of blood and gore while having a bloody good laugh at itself.
