Overview
Nerve centre of northwest Auckland, Riverhead, is already blessed with several quality dining establishments — restaurant and craft brewery Hallertau and the historic Riverhead Tavern are just two attractive options at the head of the Waitemata. Now, locals and visitors alike are set to be even more spoilt for choice, with three new eateries landing courtesy of a dining precinct.
Riverhead Central is the work of hospo veterans Dan and Ange Housley, who previously led SkyCity tapas bar Bellota and Wynyard Quarter's Merchants of Venice. The pair spent nearly four years trying to find the land owner to develop the multifaceted concept, which comprises a modern bistro, an all-day café and upmarket fish 'n' chips.
Joining the pair and their new venture, Black Pepper Hospitality, is executive chef Campbell White — formerly of St Heliers Bistro and Regatta. Fresh produce both foraged and sourced from local farmers and fields is central to the group's food philosophy and will feature across all three venues.
Bar and restaurant Forester is the anchor of the 350-square-metre space. A giant handcrafted oven stands front and centre of the large open kitchen and will allow the team to deliver authentic Roman-style wood-fired pizza. Chef White will also pull together a menu of modern bistro-style food built on comfort and simplicity.
Harvest is a light filled café that will feature an all-day brunch menu, homemade baking, house-made sodas and Havana coffee. The Chippy completes the experience with a upmarket take on firm Kiwi favourite: fish 'n' chips. As well as usual suspects like market fish — battered, crumbed or grilled — the menu will feature a range of burgers, fish tacos, cauliflower pakora and handcut chips.
Further plans for the site include a liquor store, gourmet deli products, visiting guest chefs and international wine and whiskey evenings.
Riverhead Central is a 25-minute drive from downtown Auckland. Find it at 1047 Coatesville-Riverhead Highway. Harvest and The Chippy open this month. Forester is set to open in August.
