Overview
Lunch on the run just became a whole lot more exciting (and appealing) as Ponsonby Thai eatery saan launch a new express lunch menu. Say farewell to cabinet sandwiches and lukewarm pies, the new offering delves into the flavours of North East Thailand and is inspired by tum tard lunch boxes — a traditional way of serving lunch to the working class via several small dishes. And going off CP's test run, you'll be served and eating within no time.
Head chef Lek Wichian has designed saan's tum tard lunch menu to showcase the flavours of the Isaan region in North Eastern Thailand while using local ingredients. Priced at $18, they come in both meat vegetarian options, each consisting of six components. Dishes currently on offer include: crispy fish sauce marinated chicken wings, tofu jelly, pickled eggplant, char grilled vegetables, superfine rice noodles and bone broth soup.
While the menu will change to reflect seasonal ingredients, one element that will remain consistent every day is the incredibly spicy Som Tum salad of papaya, pickled crab and pickled fish sauce. Chef Lek says the dish is "a must-have in any tum tard." Harness that spice with one of three paired drink options and you'll be away laughing.
saan's tum tard are currently available between 12pm and 4pm, Wednesday to Friday.
