Overview

Ponsonby's become well-known as the epicentre of Auckland's gastronomic venture and for good reason too. One of it's latest additions is only two weeks in and already has heads turning. Situated between Dida's and Fusion café is Jervois Road's newest eatery, Beatrix.

Dutch-born owner Mariette Van Steensel has reinvented the space with mismatched chairs, exposed filament bulbs and a dusty-blue interior. The menu is set to impress, covering all our old favourites, along with some intriguing new creations. Introducing a menu that changes with the seasons is only the beginning here.

We recommend pulling up a seat and giving the authentic European breakfast a go. Served is a smorgasbord of poached eggs, Emmental cheese, glazed champagne ham and a decadent Dutch honey cake. What more could you want? Something also worth a mention is the café's homemade buckwheat and cranberry granola. Topped with stewed rhubarb, fresh buffalo yogurt and a stunning blueberry compote, this is something we see ourselves coming back for.

The sun streams through the front glass doors early morning, making it a place you'd happily start your day sipping on an organic Kokako coffee. With a wide selection of coffee table reads and little home comforts dotted around the café, it's certainly clear that Beatrix is a place for the community to relax in.

Inner-city dwellers are also looked after with a cabinet packed with fresh wraps and rolls. What's more, they're made fresh every morning by baking connoisseurs Little Bread and Butter just up the road.

With it's doors open from 7:30am till mid-afternoon and tables roadside, sitting back and enjoying what Beatrix has to offer is made easy.
