Overview

Northcote Point residents are lucky to have a local in the form of Billy — a charming wee café serving impeccably brewed coffee, Kiwi brunch staples and a near-endless supply of incredible cabinet food. This simple but well-executed neighbourhood joint is working towards becoming a cult favourite just like its slightly fancy neighbour, Stafford Road Wine Bar.

As you approach you'll spot a few tables inhabiting the curb, most of which will probably be occupied — the locals flock here on the weekend. The fit-out has just the right amount of quirk, feeling every bit like a little local café. There's a cabinet stuffed to the brim with deliciousness, a framed black and white photo of Northcote's bygone times on the wall and a nifty neon sign spelling 'Billy' mounted on raw brick.

The service adds to the local feel, with the barista laughing away and joking with customers. The waiters take orders with smiles and chitchat. You can tell most of the customers are on first name basis, and get the feeling you would be too after a couple visits.

The menu is a simple affair with roughly ten breakfast and lunch options. Luckily, they're all perfectly executed, from the delicious smashed avo ($15.50) to the incredible smoked trevally benedict ($16.50) featuring some of the tastiest smoked fish you'll ever eat. Lunch options aren't too shabby either, with standouts including a burger stuffed with eight-hour smoked beef brisket ($14.50) and the fresh spicy flavours of a Vietnamese salad with nuoc mam dressing, fresh herbs and chilli.

If you're on the run, grab a braised beef and mushroom pie or a custard bombolone (both of which may make all your dreams come true). Whatever you do just make sure you pop in to Billy for a leisurely brunch with the locals some time soon. Friendly vibes and delicious eats guaranteed.
