Overview
Near the entrance to Elliot Stables you'll find a wee eatery sporting a bright red and yellow striped bar with a lone beer tap and 'Burg'z' signs hanging on the walls. Behind the bar and beneath a large chalk written menu, grills sizzle.
The website describes the admirable approach they take to cooking, "All Burg'z burgers meats are organic, grass-fed, hormone and antibiotic-free, free-range, pasture raised and humanely raised, resulting in burgers with superior flavour and health attributes." Nice one Burgz.
I went for The Oinker, which features slow roasted organic pork belly, wholegrain mustard, apple relish and aioli ($14.90). The meat was gloriously tender, juicy and perfectly cooked, with just a little crackling and sandwiched between a pillowy brioche bun. However, the apple relish and aioli were scarcely noticeable, keeping what could have been a glorious burger from being truly flavourful and delicious.
The Something's Fishy was a basic, yet decent burger, featuring beer battered market fish, homemade tartare sauce, fresh lemon and aioli ($15.50). The fish was fairly tasty and well cooked, and while the all important sauce was again sparingly applied. This was still a fairly tasty affair.
The menu features several other tempting options, like the Zen Hen - chargrilled free-range chicken marinated in chilli, ginger, bb spice mix and mint yoghurt, with lettuce, tomato, cucumber and mango chutney ($12.90). The sides are equally as mouthwatering, including delights such as cheesy chicken bites with chipotle aioli ($12) and organic bacon wrapped onion rings ($10).
The latter are not quite as phenomenal as they sound, but they're certainly worth tasting. Plus there's Tuatara on tap, some decent wines on offer and several delicious non alcoholic bevvys.
There's certainly a lot of potential in Burg'z, particularly if they can work on making their burgers taste as delicious as they sound on paper by improving the execution. If they manage to get it right in future, their combination of ethically sourced ingredients and well made burgers will prove tempting for many an Aucklander.
