Overview

Egg and Spoon's arrival in St Kevins Arcade is further evidence (as if it was needed) that K' Road is becoming as popular for frequent during the daylight hours, as it is (really) late at night for its renowned party scene.

The opening comes from Courtney MacKinnon and Ash Faithfull, who bonded over a shared love of food and hatched the idea for a mono ingredient restaurant.

The bright round yellow sign is warm and welcoming, as are the staff, all four of whom work in a remarkably small space churning out eggy delights. As a coeliac, menus are a bit of a minefield so I'm never happier than when I have choices, as opposed to being directed towards the one gluten-free item on the menu. I think I may have actually squealed with delight when I was told that any dish could be made gluten-free.

Egg and Spoon is a cafe devoted to the wonder and versatility of the humble egg. The menu isn't huge with only seven items to choose from but still manages to include a vegan and kids option with additional items available as "eggstras". (The eggy pun fun doesn't stop there). The cafe is clean and bright with the yellow motif carrying through to a yellow tulip on each table and even bright yellow coffee cups.

We tucked into the Brekkie Burg ($14) and Brekkie Bagel ($12) and a coffee each which were tasty and filling. I will admit, however, to a serious case of food envy when we saw The Egg And Spoon ($11 or $14 depending on whether you want to be a big spoon or a little spoon), float past us to another customer. This signature dish is a visually appealing egg-topped shakshuka presented in a jar with accompanying soldiers. Can you ever go wrong with an adult version of a childhood classic?

This is a good example of doing one thing, but doing it well, which brings me to my one complaint, the one thing Egg and Spoon doesn't do well is coffee. It wasn't up to the standard of the food, we didn't enjoy the flavour of the Mt. Atkinson coffee and felt it had been over-extracted when being made.

That said, the quality of the service, the tasty food, the great value for money and of course, the egg-celent puns means I'm looking forward to my next trip to Egg and Spoon, in the hope that they amend their errant coffee ways.
